There are remnants of contemporary foliation in dark ink in the top outer corners: 118-125 (1r-8r), 127 (9r), 134-135 (10r-11r and 142-143 (12r-13r). This foliation has been erased.A later hand has added some of the former foliation again (also in ink in the top outer corners), this time in parentheses: (118)-(123) and (127).
There are three quires:
  • Quire I: fols. 1-8 (1+8, 2+7, 3+6, 4+5) (4 bifolia)
  • Quire II: fols. 9-10 (9+10) (1 bifolium) Note: In the middle of this quire 3 bifolia are missing.
  • Quire III: fols. 11-13 (11+12, 13) (1 bifolium, 1 singleton) Note: In the middle of this quire 3 bifolia are missing. Fol. 13 was added to the end of the quire.
There are no quire signatures. There are catchwords on the verso-sides of the leaves that used to be the end of a quire: fols. 8v, 10v and 12v.
  • A total of 12 leaves have been lost: 6 in between fols. 9v and 10r and 6 in between fols. 11v and 12r.
  • The leaves are rather dark from stains, especially fols. 1r, 9r and 10v-11r. Moreover, the margins and edges of most leaves are darker than the rest of the page.
  • The fore-edge of fol. 13 is partially untrimmed.
The text is written in one column. 240 mm x 135 mm26-2910-12Note: There are running titles throughout the manuscript.
Jón Erlendsson Hybrida Sole
Info: (Kålund 1889-1894, 1: 173)
  • Initial: There is a large decorated initial ("Þ") with a doubled outline on fol. 1r corresponding to ca. 8 lines. It is moreover decorated with floral ornaments and additional lines and patterns. Note: It appears that this initial was drawn in a different ink than the text and may be later than the text.
  • Initial: Section beginnings are written with larger letters (1-2 lines) that are slightly decorated by means of additional strokes and squiggles.
  • Paratext: The rubric and first line of text are distinct by means of larger letters, sometimes capitals.
  • Frieze: Here and there, there is a small tail-piece in the last line of a paragraph or chapter (looks like a "z" combined with a "rum"-abbreviation).
  • On fols. 9v and 11v, a later hand, possibly Kristian Kålund, has added:
    "Her vantar á at gizka 6 blöð. K. 9."
    (9v) and
    "Vantar (aptr) á at gizka 6 blöð. K. 9."

The manuscript is bound in a full binding made of parchment on cardboard from Árni Magnússon's time. The pastedown is made from blank paper. There are parchment strips laced through the spine fold and a blue sticker with the shelfmark is attached to the spine. There used to be a round sticker for the running number as well.
There is no additional material.
The codicological unit was written in Iceland. Kålund dates it to the seventeenth century (Kålund 1889-1894, 1: 173), but the active writing period of the scribe was ca. 1625-1672.

Former Physical Context:
  • When Árni Magnússon acquired the codicological unit it was part of Ms28.
  • Before then the codicological unit was part of Ms28a.
